Joseph Goodwin creates immersive interactive experiences at the intersection of craft, design, electronics, animation, music, and art. He crafts furniture-like objects that are designed to shift understanding of historic American narratives told through participatory game-like technology. His work explores how play and perceptions of agency serve two functions: first as a means to remove barriers to discovering and reinterpreting history, and second as a meta-awareness of one’s participation in those histories. For Joseph, this involves experiencing the complex relationship between an aesthetic interaction and the conceptual underpinnings of the engagement itself. A meta-reading both implicates and promotes a transformational experience for the viewer that capitulates into moments of reflexive self-realization.
